Looking to spend a sunny, breezy weekend in our neck of the woods? We’ve got just the place: Cayucos — a tiny, quirky, beachside town full of good food, cold drinks, and one-of-a-kind local gems. The name “cayucos,” is Spanish for canoes, once used by the Chumash people who first lived there.
At just 30–45 minutes from Stepladder Ranch, Cayucos makes for the perfect day trip if you’re staying on the farm, or a full weekend destination if you’re beach-minded and goat-curious. It's laid-back, unpolished in the best way, and feels like a step back in time (in a salty-aired kind of way).
Here’s how we like to do a weekend in Cayucos, Stepladder-style:
🧇 Start with Breakfast: Hidden Kitchen
A locals’ favorite, this hidden gem is tucked away just off Ocean Ave. The star of the show? Blue corn waffles.
- Michelle’s favorite: The Weirdo Waffle – topped with avocado, egg, pickled onions, and spicy aioli.
- Jack’s go-to: Plain with butter and syrup – simple, classic, and lets that waffle flavor shine.
- Also great: their smoothies and cold brew.
☕ Snack + Coffee Stop: Bijou Bakery
- A Nordic-inspired bakery known for flakey pastries and strong coffee.
- Michelle always orders: the Otabar – an oat + date + almond bar.
- Jack’s pick: a double espresso – strong, no nonsense.
🐾 Stroll the Beach Boardwalk
Wander along the beachfront boardwalk, look for sea glass, and pop in and out of the funky little shops and antique stores. Keep your eyes peeled for sunbathing sea lions.
🛍️ Shop Local
We love a good small business moment. Cayucos is full of them:
- Maven Leather – Handmade leather goods you won’t find anywhere else. Wallets, bags, belts, all crafted with love.
- Cayucos Collective – Awesome screen-printed tees and art made by local artists.
- Mical Skincare – Michelle uses the Sun Shield every day. Jack swears by the Emu Oil (yes, it’s a thing—try it!).
🌮 Casual Lunch: Cayucos Gas Station (Trust Us)
Don't let the name fool you—this place serves up some of the best Mexican food around.
- Jack’s fave: Bacon breakfast burrito
- Michelle’s order: Taco salad with grilled chicken 🥵
Pro Tip: While you're nearby, swing into the Cayucos convenience store and grab a bottle (or two) of Cayucos Hot Sauce. The red is the OG—classic heat, packed with flavor. The green is a newer addition we’re obsessed with—bright, tangy, and just the right kick. This hot sauce is legit GOOD. Trust us because once you try it, you'll want it on everything.
🍪 Afternoon Treat: Brown Butter Cookie Co.
You can smell it from down the block. These cookies are rich, crumbly, and made with a dash of sea salt.
- Jack goes for: Coffee cookies
- Michelle loves: Classic chocolate chip (still warm if you’re lucky!)
🍹 Dinner + Sunset: Schooners
Right on the water, with views for days. A great place to catch a sunset or live music (check their event schedule). Cold drinks, coastal food, and a classic California vibe. Bonus: oysters + cocktails = always a win.
🍷 Wine Tasting: Cayucos Cellars
For a laid-back, family-run wine experience, visit Cayucos Cellars. Their tasting room is located at 131 N Ocean Ave, just steps from the beach.
🍻 Nightcap: Cayucos Tavern
An old-school bar where the shuffleboard is real, the pool tables are worn-in, and the music (and stories) get better as the night goes on. Perfect for late-night shenanigans.
🐐 Want the Full Coast + Country Experience?
Stay with Us! If you’re planning a Cayucos weekend, why not spend a night or two on the ranch? We’re a scenic 30–45 minute drive inland, and our Farm Stay lets you wake up to goats, fresh air, and maybe even a cheese tasting (if you’re lucky).
It’s the best of both worlds: beach one day, baby goats the next. Win-win. Whether you're here for the waves, the waffles, or just some well-earned chill time, Cayucos is a tiny town with a whole lot of charm. And the best part? It's just down the road from us.
See you out there!
